Haiti garment workers share $1m payout after factory closure a year ago

“More than 1,100 garment workers in Haiti are sharing $1m (£830,000) in compensation from the owner of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein after being left destitute by the closure of a factory.

PVH, which was one of several brand owners sourcing from the Vald’or factory in the Caribbean country, agreed to pay the sum to cover missed severance pay, pension contributions directly to workers and the government pension fund after involvement by the Worker Rights Consortium lobby group.”

Study confirms need for binding agreements on pay

The study, undertaken by the New Conversations Project at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, lays out the key elements for a global severance fund, namely the need for it to be legally binding and to feature detailed obligations on brands and employers regarding the provision of severance.

When millions of garment workers at factories around the world lost pay and jobs during the early stages of the pandemic, the study states, it brought to light the precarious work environment they have faced for decades.

Victoria’s Secret pays sacked Thai workers $8.3m in ‘wage theft’ settlement
